Revenge hackers leak more Conti ransomware source code

A newer interpretation of the source law for the Conti ransomware has been blurted online, reportedly by the same person who’s been tearing the group piecemeal for the once three weeks. The incident is the rearmost in a series of leaks from a Ukrainian cybersecurity experimenter who’s running a particular vendetta of feathers against Conti, ever since the ultimate declared it would side with Russia, as it invades its western neighbor. That being said, the source law for Conti interpretation 3 was uploaded to VirusTotal, and linked on Twitter. The library…

The ‘cheap’ Apple Watch 3 might not be long for this world

The Apple Watch 3 is almost five years old now – if it were a child, it’d be in school right now. Yet Apple still supports the device, selling the aging smartwatch from its website alongside accessories and straps for it. But nothing lasts forever. A prominent leaker and analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, has tweeted to say that “Apple Watch Series 3 may go to end-of-life in Q322” – that’s July to September. The reason is apparently that the antique wearable “can’t meet the requirements” of the next build of watchOS…

Chip shortage helps push smartphone shipments down by a third in China

The number of smartphones shipped in China fell by almost a third last month in further evidence that the ongoing global chip shortage is having an impact on the mobile industry. According to figures published by the government-backed China Academy of Information and Communications (CAICT), shipments fell by 31.8% year-on-year from 21.3 million to 14.5 million during February. The total is less than half the 32.4 million shipped during February 2019 – a year before the Covid-19 pandemic caused a significant drop in shipments. China smartphone sales Global sales slumped…

AWS is the supercomputing heavyweight you didn’t know existed

Many people likely know AWS as the world’s largest provider of cloud computing services. But far fewer people think of the Amazon subsidiary as a supercomputing heavyweight. Predominantly, that’s because AWS is happy to operate at the less sexy end of the high-performance computing (HPC) spectrum, far from the shiny proof-of-concept systems that decorate the summit of the Top 500 rankings. Instead, the organization is concerned with democratizing access to supercomputing resources, by making available cloud-based services that a large number of companies and academic institutions can access. Western Digital desktop app exposes Windows and macOS users to attack

Western Digital’s proprietary file explorer EdgeRover, has received a patch that addresses a critical security vulnerability. The fixed flaw, tracked as CVE-2022-22998, is a directory traversal bug, which essentially means – people were allowed to access restricted files. Discovered by cybersecurity researcher Xavier Danest, it’s been given a severity score of 9.1.  The good news is that the endpoint already needs to be compromised, if this vulnerability is to be abused. In a published advisory, the company said very little about the flaw itself, other than if successfully exploited, could lead…

NRA confirms it was hit by ransomware attack

The National Rifle Association (NRA) has finally confirmed it suffered a ransomware attack last October. The NRA’s political action committee (PAC) filed a report to the Federal Election Commission (FEC), earlier this month to confirm the attack, claiming it was the reason why the organization couldn’t report some of the donations it had received at the time. The filing says the attack, which took place on October 20, 2021, took down its network for a fortnight. “During that time, we were not able to access email or network files. When…

It’s now easier than ever for hackers to abuse Google Chrome

Single Sign-On (SSO), an identity verification method that helps people sign into various online accounts without needing a password, can be spoofed, enabling threat actors to steal login credentials or multi-factor authentication (MFA) key. A cybersecurity researcher going by the name mr.d0x published a template on GitHub, which uses the Browser in the Browser (BitB) attack method to create a fake browser window within a real one. The template is available for Chrome for both Windows and Mac, for both light and dark themes.  Similar methods have been around in…

Fortnite Season 2’s biggest change is easily its most controversial

The unimaginable has happened: Building has been removed from Fortnite BR. The bread and butter mode has been overhauled with the dawn of Chapter 3 Season 2 — but the good news is, the change doesn’t affect all modes. Still, Fortnite sweats who rely on building may be a little less than enthused. Fortnite’s battle royale portion is now an all-out shooter. And there’s nowhere to hide. Epic announced the news over the weekend, but the dev has offered some consolation to players who are worried about getting annihilated.    …
