Over a thousand container images hosted on the popular database repository Docker Hub are malicious, putting users at risk of cyberattack, experts have warned. According to a report from Sysdig, the images contained nefarious assets such as cryptominers, backdoors, and DNS hijackers.  Container images are essentially templates for creating applications quickly and easily, without having to start from scratch when reusing certain features. A post on a “well-known hacking community forum” claims almost half a billion WhatsApp records have been breached and are up for sale. The post, which multiple sources have confirmed is likely to be true, claims to be selling an up-to-date, 2022 database of 487 million mobile numbers used on WhatsApp, which contains data from 84 countries. Fake World Cup streaming sites are targeting virtual fans

Zscaler has issued a warning to football fans looking to watch the World Cup online via streaming sites. The company’s latest Zscaler TheatLabz research found there has been a recent spike in cyber attacks targeting football fans using fake streaming sites and lottery scams, which is “leveraging the rush and excitement around these uncommon events to infect users with malware.” The study found a recent increase in domain registrations relating to the World Cup, which is to be expected as more companies ramp up their football-related offerings online. New research has claimed nearly half (47%) of social media users have fallen victim to some kind of shopping scam on social media, and they haven’t fared much better against other common frauds. Google and Microsoft add more renewable energy for datacenters

Google and Microsoft have both invested in sizable renewable energy contracts to power their data centers. According to The Register, Google has signed a 12-year 100MW corporate power purchase agreement with Scottish offshore wind development called “Moray West”,  in Scotland’s relatively remote Moray Firth region. The joint venture is owned by EDP Renewables and French firm Engie, and will see the search giant get 5 TWh of green power from the 882 MW offshore wind farm, starting in 2025, which will be used to power its Google Cloud UK region.…
